Etiquette and Rules

  • Fees: Mountain bikers and horse riders age 17 and older are required to have a trail permit to use trails on the Hoosier National Forest. Trail permits are $3.00/day or $25.00/year. Trail permits are available at either the Tell City or Bedford offices of the Hoosier National Forest, through the mail, or from several local stores. Information on vendor locations and the trail permit program can be found on the Hoosier National Forest website at www.fs.fed.us/r9/hoosier/recreation/trpermits.htm
  • Horse riders and mountain bikers are required to stay on trails designated for that type of use.
  • Observe the following trail courtesy:
    • Mountain bikers yield to horse riders and hikers. Make your approach known well in advance.
    • Hikers yield to horse riders
    • Horse riders control your horse.
  • Motorized travel is not permitted on this trail.
  • Pack out your trash.


  • Be aware of hunting seasons.
  • Use precautions for ticks.
  • If a parking lot is not available where you wish to access, be sure your vehicle is off the road.
  • Many trails intersect roadways. If you choose to use a road as part of your trip, be mindful of traffic.
