Civil War Grave Markers

On August 14, 1865, four months after the close of the Civil War, Union soldiers from Ohio boarded the USS Argosy #3 on the lower Mississippi and started home. On August 21, a storm drove the Argosy ashore at this point and the boilers exploded. Nine or ten men were killed. Bert Fenn found information in Louisville which suggested that one of the ten said to have been buried here actually lived until reaching Louisville where he died.

The Argosy #3 had been built in 1864 and was commandeered by the Union Army. It was refitted in November 1866 and returned to private service. It was dismantled a few years after 1873.
